Social Security and Service Numbers
Background: Service numbers were issued by the armed forces as a means of identifying individuals. These were also known as military serial numbers or, by the Coast Guard, as signal numbers. The Air Force and Army discontinued using service numbers on July 1, 1969, the Navy and Marine Corps on July 1, 1972 and the Coast Guard on October 1, 1974.
Social Security numbers are now used in place of service numbers.
It is NOT possible to derive a Social Security number from a military service number or visa versa. These are two completely separate numbers issued by two different government agencies.
This information should help identify a region or area that a person enlisted or was drafted into the service.
